Claude Raines- Claude Raines LP

I've been meaning to post this LP for months now, don't know why it's taken me so long. Up on the slab is the lone LP by Claude Raines, a US based guitar-driven post-punk band from Rochester, NY. Rochester must've been a great breeding ground for awesome, underrated post-punk, between this LP and of course, Eleven Pond.

The closest touchstones for this 1987 LP include The Church, The Chameleons, Psychedelic Furs, and The Snake Corps, complete with the big guitar driven sound of all those bands. A little bit of background noise on side A of the rip- it seems as if my copy of this LP has seen better days, but nothing terribly distracting from this otherwise excellent LP. According to the band's Myspace page, run by an official member, they are hoping for a reissue and are looking for interested parties or labels who could make it happen. Hopefully this post here can bring this excellent LP to more widespread attention. Feel free to reach out to the band!

DADA- 12'' Discography

Here's the full 12'' discography of DADA, another new wave band from New York City. Contained within are both of their releases, both which walk a fine line between catchy minimal synth and bouncy synthpop.

The first 12'' was discovered whilst record shopping with Goutroy, who recently relocated to NYC via San Francisco. I randomly ran into him at a lesser record store, after a rather unceremonious trip home. A little solo shopping therapy turned into an afternoon of bin-hopping around the village. Sometimes I shop with the intention of looking for things I know, love, and plan to DJ. Other times, an interesting cover or title catches my attention, which is how I find most of the records posted here. However, this record was plucked out by Goutroy at one of my favorite shops in the East Village, a place that keeps odd hours and specializes in new wave. After one brief listen (he had placed this record in the "maybe" pile), I quickly became obsessed (perhaps annoyingly so) with his purchase, and quickly hunted down a copy of my own, and we've both been spinning it regularly at the Wierd party since. Camaraderie at its finest! That's not to say there wasn't a bit of competitive edge between us that day, as there tends to be when two underground music collectors hunt in the same shop at the same time. I feel like I paid more attention to what he had in his stack as opposed to the bins in front of me. He found R.E.K.'s excellent 12'' (found here at Crispy Nuggets) and I seethed with jealousy. That said, we both found each other some excellent gems, and both walked away with some hefty purchases that day. The rest, you can say, was nerd history.

I was able to snag the second 12'' online for a relatively cheap price, and while I prefer the first release overall (especially the amazing a-side), the two sound very similar. Not surprising, given that they were released only one year apart. The band seemed to have a sense of humor, from their vocal delivery, lyrical content, and even the record label (presumably self-released under "A Major Recording Label," whose only releases are these two records). The band members even all shared the same last name, though they may very well be brothers. Slight tongue-in-cheek humor aside, these tracks are perfectly suited for a dancefloor, and are some of my favorite obscure gems.

Speaking of that sense of collector camaraderie, you can also find this same post over at Goutroy's awesome Viable Commercial blog, back up and running after a brief hiatus! Same rips, two blogs, at the SAME TIME for maximum listening pleasure! Here's the info:

Philippe Entre2mers- Quai D' Orient 12''

Apologies in advance for flooding your hard drives with music, folks. Two posts in store for today- mostly because I promised some Wierd party attendees I'd drop these records immediately for download!

First, we have some killer French synthpop, reminiscent of Depeche Mode with some slight italo leanings. The same track appears here twice in different forms, and I can't decide which one I like better. This 12'' appears on the Fan Club label, another Damned-inspired offshoot of New Rose records, which featured Taxi Girl, Metal Urbain, and Kas Product as well as some classic proto-punk material.

Not much else I can tell you about this one, so let's get right to it:

Goûts De Luxe- (Mostly Full) Discography

Hot on the heels of this morning's post, here's a very nearly complete discography of French synthpop band Goûts De Luxe. Some of you may already be familiar with the band, as a few of their a-sides were prominent, though now obscure, new wave hits- some of the best of the era. I also included one of the band's finest moments (the killer minimal synth-esque b-side "Last Train") on the most recent installments of the Systems of Romance loose tracks compilations. Since I haven't seen their work shared out there, I figured it was due time to organize it and sort it all out for everyone's enjoyment.

The band's origins date back to the mid 1980s in Brest, a city in northwestern France. The band's lineup changed a handful of times throughout their short time together. After recording (or, in actuality, NOT recording) on the first single, original guitarist Jean-Éric Montfort left the band and was replaced by Marianna Kliska, wife of vocalist Jacques le Honsec. They released two more singles before calling it a day.

With the exception of the instrumental version of "Les Yeux de Laura," and the promo mixes of the track, this zip file ocntains all the tracks recorded by Goûts De Luxe during their time together, including all three singles and respective b-sides. I hope you all don't mind missing out on the instrumental mix, as I've never found them to be very necessary, but I should be able to track it down (in time) if needed. However, as a consolation, I have included a different extended mix of "Omaha Beach" that I can't quite place on either single, with a different running time and everything! If anyone knows where it belongs, do chime in! Otherwise, let's get to the details:

Goûts De Luxe- Les Yeux de Laura 7'' (1986)
1. Les Yeux de Laura

Goûts De Luxe- Les Yeux de Laura 12'' (1986)
1. Les Yeux de Laura (Extended Mix)

Goûts De Luxe- Omaha Beach 7'' (1987)
1. Omaha Beach
2. Ubik (Mission Secréte)

Goûts De Luxe- Omaha Beach 12'' (1987)
1. Omaha Beach (Remix)
3. Fade to Grey (Visage cover)

Goûts De Luxe- Dans Un Autre Pays 7'' (1989)
1. Dans Un Autre Pays
2. Last Train

Goûts De Luxe- Dans Un Autre Pays 12'' (1989)
1. Dans Un Autre Pays (Maxi Version)

BONUS- Omaha Beach (Extended Mix)

*download it all here*

Since the band enjoyed some relative success throughout Europe, there are a few promo videos floating around. Here's a clip for "Omaha Beach."

Also, if your French is fluent, you can read more about the band (including lyrics, I believe) on their official website. There are also a slew of photos, and a demo recording hidden in the site, so be sure to explore:

Coming soon: Glamatron, DADA, and more French synthpop. Stay tuned, and happy 2011!

Candidate- Side By Side LP

Here's the lone LP by French synthpop act Candidate, released in 1987. There's very little to be found about this two piece, but there are a few other releases of theirs kicking around, including a split K7 and a split 7'' with Gangrène. Would love to hear them, should anyone out there have a copy kicking around!

Otherwise, you can expect some killer minimal synth grooves, with a little bit of edgy guitar thrown in for good measure. a nice mix of tension and melody here. Sticking with today's theme, you can also find Strange Girl on one of the Tribute to Some Bizarre compilations... Here's the info:

Parade Ground- Strange World 12''

Here's a 12'' by one of my favorite artists. Walking a fine line between glossy synthpop and early EBM (this 12'' is on Play it Again Sam), Parade Ground issued six killer singles and one full length record, all pretty much essential for fans of the genre. The main lineup consists of brothers Jean-Marc and Pierre Pauly, who originally collaborated with Front 242. The brothers occasionally lent a hand to some of Front 242's middle period recordings, maintaining a close personal relationship with Daniel B. The band has also collaborated with Colin Newman of Wire, who produced several of the band's releases.

While the band split soon after releasing their full length in 1988, Parade Ground would issue two CDs in 2007. One consists of live tracks, while the other features brand new material.

Released in 1987, this 12'' contains two high energy tracks, while the final track is a more atmospheric affair. Here's the info.

Parade Ground- Strange World 12''

2. Off Balance
3. The Chosen One

Though this one comes a close second, my favorite Parade Ground 12'' can be found over at Crispy Nuggets. "Gold Rush" is a beast.

The Plague- Naraka LP

Now here's something for all you deathrock/post-punk kids. Up on the slab is the lone LP from NY's very own The Plague, self-released in 1987. With tracks titles such as "Vampyre" and "Suicide Queen," you can expect some witchy female vocals, thrashy guitar riffs, and other such gothic sounds, which should be right at home for fans of the genre.

2. Vampyre
3. Murder
4. Suicide Queen
5. Empress

Man Klan- Flesh Machine LP

Second on the slab we have Man Klan's lone LP, released in 1987. Can't seem to find much about these guys either, and their entire discography consists of two 12'' releases in 1985, this LP, and a 12'' single for "Wanting & Waiting." I believe the band was Swedish, though this particular LP was released on a UK label and features vocals in English. Pretty fluent, to boot!

Some great female fronted gothic grooves on here, sort of reminiscent of Concrete Blonde, (Devils era) X-Mal Deustchland, or Missing Persons, with sexually ambiguous lyrics. Striking similarities to mid-period Siouxsie as well, though track six is not a cover of the Banshees hit.

Man Klan- Flesh Machine LP
1. Wanting & Waiting
2. Everytime
3. Love For Pleasure
4. No Time For Mercy

Flue- Some-times in Arabia 12''

Here's the final 12'' from Dutch synth band Flue, released in 1987. The fantastic Phoenix Hairpins blog features the band's two full-length LPs, so with the exception of any bonus tracks issued on the One and a Half CD reissue, this should complete their discography. You can get their debut LP here, and their second LP here.

For those unfamiliar with the Flue story, the band was one of the flagship artists on the Torso label, who issued several key LPs from The Cult, Sonic Youth, and The Residents. Several more obscure synth/wave acts such as Mekanik Kommando and Mecano also found their way on to the label. In fact, Flue guitarist Cor Bolten was active in Mecano before joining the band after the release of their 1981 debut. The band's second LP, Vista was recorded with an entirely new lineup.

It would be another four years before the band released their final single, 1987's Some-Times in Arabia, which featured two versions of the title track and one exclusive b-side. Here's the information for the single:

Buzz- Kennedy / Marinetti / Sexe 12''

Here's a triple threat of 12'' recordings by Buzz, an underrated, synth driven act from the heart of France. The band released their first cassette in 1985, soon signing with Danceteria records (A Wedding Anniversary/In the Nursery, etc.) The band released four 12'' records over the course of the 1980s, splitting soon after. However, the band has since reactivated, re-releasing several older cuts and issuing new material during the latter half of this past decade.

I've included three of the band's 12'' records on Danceteria, leaving behind the 25th anniversary edition of "Kennedy," the band's best known track. For those who want a more complete snapshot of Buzz's '80s material, be sure to pick up their extremely limited CD compilation, entitled Buzz 1984 - 89. Not only does the compilation include superior quality versions of these recordings, it also tacks a few killer live tracks at the end. You can nab a copy here and listen the band's new sounds via their myspace page. Without any further ado, here's the details for these releases:

Buzz- Kennedy 12'' (1986)
1. Kennedy
2. Picaso

Buzz- Marinetti 12'' (1987)
1. Marinetti
2. Lo Sai
3. Marinetti (Extended Mix)

*My rip of this 12'' has the more sparse intro to "Lo Sai" separated from the main track, most likely done for DJ purposes.

Buzz- Sexe 12''
1. Sexe
2. Berlin
3. 12 Inch Allah
4. Sexe (Fire Mix)

Various Artists- Insane Music For Insane People Vol. 13

Here's part 13 of a rather infamous collection of European oddities, with some involvement from Alain Neffe of Bene Gesserit, featured here in various incarnations in the past. Of course, that band is featured here, as well as a handful of others, including the elusive Lelu/Lu's (featured previously), a rare demo version of Bill Pritchard's most well known track, and experimental collection Human Flesh. The A-side is more pop-oriented, while the B-side is a far more experimental affair. Though there are 25 volumes in this series, this seems to be the only one that was ever released on wax, while the remaining 24 volumes are on cassette. Why this one is on vinyl is anyone's guess, so wIthout any further ado, let's get to the tracklisting, complete with each band's country of origin.

Various Artists- Insane Music For Insane People Vol. 13 (1987)
1. Lelu/Lu's- Down My Spine (England)
2. Bill Pritchard- Black Souls Under White Skies (England)

The Essence- A Monument of Trust LP

Real quick post today, folks, but here's the second Essence record, released in 1987 via Midnight Music. The band were still a three piece at this point in time, featuring the same lineup as their debut, so the sound doesn't stray too far. I do happen to prefer this record to Purity though, by a hair!

Otherwise, this particular upload contains two bonus tracks plucked from the A Mirage 12'' (the extended mix and "Lollipop"), as well as "The Happiness" another b-side from the This Cat 12''. Perhaps the band couldn't fit these tracks on one LP record, but it's nice to have them in a cleaner format, for sure! On that note, here's the information for the record. Enjoy!

2. Drifting

Noel- Noel LP

Here's a little classic and somewhat shameless synthpop record that's been a fun-filled favorite of mine for some time. The record in question is the debut album from Noel (Noel Pagan), a Cuban-born New Yorker with a powerful voice and some street smart credibility. Debut single "Silent Running" was released in 1987, but it took almost a year for his self-titled debut to appear in more readily available form on 4th and Broadway Records.

On listening, the record recalls mid-period Depeche Mode and various New Beat one-offs, with a more New York freestyle vibe. Though Noel would release a handful of dance mix singles into the '90s, his proper sophomore effort, Hearts on Fire failed to capture the same energy as the debut. He currently collaborates on recordings with the likes of Eddie Arroyo and Eddie Baez.

Without any further ado, here's the details for Noel's self-titled debut.

Noel- Noel LP
1. Silent Morning
2. Fire To Ice
3. To Be With You
4. Out Of Time
5. Change
6. Like A Child
7. Fallen Angel
8. City Streets
9. What I Feel For You

Though I can't embed the official video for "Silent Morning," here's a live performance of the track from 1988.

Weimar Gesang- THE REST!

After some insight on some rare and otherwise unreleased Weimar Gesang material, I am pleased to offer the last of their uncovered gems, once and for all! Thanks a ton to all who have uploaded some of the harder-to-find material and offered extra information on the band.

Included in the zip file below are three releases. The first two are respective sides of a 1983 demo cassette, the A-side being early demos of familiar tracks and the B-side featuring a rare live set from the band's early incarnation, recorded in October of 1983. This release predates the previously uploaded Our Silent Growth cassette. The third and final release attached is a 1987 rough mix of what was to be the fourth WG record, never officially released and given to the band's closest friends just before they split up. Very rare materials, all three, and thanks to allelimo for encoding them!

Otherwise, here's the nitty gritty:

Weimar Gesang- Demo 1983 (Cassette side A)
1. Frail Moments
2. Along The Walls
3. Locked In My Castle
4. Refusing
5. Show Me
6. Motionless Dance
7. Incomprehension

Weimar Gesang- Live 1983 (Cassette side B)
1. Motionless Dance
2. Refusing
3. Locked In My Castle
4. Torn Souls
5. One Sweet Night

Weimar Gesang- It is a Crime

Burning Skies of Elysium- The Last Revolving Door LP

Can't seem to find a slew of info about today's band, Burning Skies of Elysium (simply Elysium for short), who released one lone LP in 1987. I have only deduced that the band hails from the UK and is primarily a three-piece, for though little information exists, several photos of the band can be found.

As far as releases go, The Last Revolving Door was preceeded by one 12'' and one 7'' single, and the album itself was repressed on CD in 1993 via Spectre Records, with three bonus tracks attached. They are included in the link below, for your listening pleasure. Without any further ado:

Secession- A Dark Enchantment LP/CD

Another request fulfilled today, ladies and gentlemen. This one's for short lived Scottish synth band Secession's lone LP, entitled A Dark Enchantment. The four piece band formed in 1983 and split after a few singles and the aforementioned record, calling it quits by 1987. They were involved briefly with both Siren Records and the infamous Beggars Banquet label.

After Secession's split, members Charlie Kelly and James Seenan co-formed Scottish pop band the Vaselines with Charlie's brother Eugene and Frances Mckee. Coincidentally, we just caught the Vaselines in concert, as they've just reformed for a few US dates, but Charlie and James were nowhere to be seen. Meanwhile, lead Secession vocalist Peter Thomson passed away in the late 1990s.

A Dark Enchantment is apparently limited to 1000 copies on LP, and is the only record the band has released on compact disc (which is the version I've uploaded, complete with a handful of bonus tracks). If you see either, snap them up, as they're both incredibly scarce. Otherwise, here's the digital details:

Secession- A Dark Enchantment LP/CD
01. Eventide

Inca Babies- Evil Hour

Here's something a little more explosive and guitar oriented than the usual fare. Today's post features UK post-punk act Inca Babies, who formed between 1982-83 in the industrialized neighborhoods of Manchester. The band took several cues from the likes of the Birthday Party, the Cramps, and the Gun Club, influences which the Inca Babies proudly wear on their sleeve.

As the UK music scene shifted away from the initial wave of post-punkers into a more synth based dance direction (especially in Manchester with the rise of New Order and the Happy Mondays), the Inca Babies soldiered on for four years total, releasing four records and several 12'' singles and EPs. The band split in 1987, and in 2006, a collection of favorites hand picked by the band was released on Cherry Red Records.

Uploaded below is their final LP Evil Hour, released in January of 1987, a few months before the band split. The details:

Inca Babies- Evil Hour
1. Evil Hour
2. Long Uphill Trek
3. Partisans River

Pink Turns Blue- If Two Worlds Kiss LP

German post-punk band Pink Turns Blue is a recent discovery of mine, a band who are enjoying a bit of a renaissance these days as a reactivated unit. The band originally formed in 1985, and combined the playful edge of new wave with the dark undertones of the post-punk movement. Sources claim they are one of the pioneering darkwave bands, ushering in a new faction of post-punk inspired music. The band would release six full lengths and a series of seminal singles before splitting in 1995.

Due to high demand, Pink Turns Blue briefly reformed in 2003 to release a best-of compilation, appearing live at various festivals throughout the year. The reformation led to further collaborations between members, and the band has since released two full length records, 2005's Phoenix and 2007's Ghost.

However, jumping back 20 years, I've uploaded their debut record, 1987's If Two Worlds Kiss. The details:

Pink Turns Blue- If Two Worlds Kiss LP
1. I Coldly Stare Out
2. After All
3. Walking On Both Sides
4. State Of Mind
5. When It Rains
6. If Two Worlds Kiss

8. Missing You
9. A Moment Sometimes
10. When The Hammer Comes Down

Feels like it's been ages since I've posted a video...but here's a clip of the band performing 'Your Master is Calling' from their 1988 sophomore effort, Meta.

Clint Ruin & Lydia Lunch- Stinkfist 12''/(Don't Fear) the Reaper 12''

Today's post features two collaborative 12'' singles from two of NYC no-wave's greatest. Clint Ruin (a.k.a. Foetus, Jim Thirwell) and Lydia Lunch (ex-Teenage Jesus and the Jerks) dated a spell in the late eighties/early nineties, and during the scuzz-punk romance of the century, cut two 12'' singles. Aside from the covers that grace the second single, the original material is as dissonant and heavy-hitting as each of the pair's own work.

Details:

Clint Ruin & Lydia Lunch- Stinkfist 12'' (1987)
1. Stinkfist

2. Meltdown Oratorio

3. Son of Stink

4. The Crumb*

*feat. Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth on guitar.

Though no proper recording of this exists, here's the pair performing the Stones' 'Sympathy for the Devil' at a concert in 2001.
