Goûts De Luxe- (Mostly Full) Discography

Hot on the heels of this morning's post, here's a very nearly complete discography of French synthpop band Goûts De Luxe. Some of you may already be familiar with the band, as a few of their a-sides were prominent, though now obscure, new wave hits- some of the best of the era. I also included one of the band's finest moments (the killer minimal synth-esque b-side "Last Train") on the most recent installments of the Systems of Romance loose tracks compilations. Since I haven't seen their work shared out there, I figured it was due time to organize it and sort it all out for everyone's enjoyment.

The band's origins date back to the mid 1980s in Brest, a city in northwestern France. The band's lineup changed a handful of times throughout their short time together. After recording (or, in actuality, NOT recording) on the first single, original guitarist Jean-Éric Montfort left the band and was replaced by Marianna Kliska, wife of vocalist Jacques le Honsec. They released two more singles before calling it a day.

With the exception of the instrumental version of "Les Yeux de Laura," and the promo mixes of the track, this zip file ocntains all the tracks recorded by Goûts De Luxe during their time together, including all three singles and respective b-sides. I hope you all don't mind missing out on the instrumental mix, as I've never found them to be very necessary, but I should be able to track it down (in time) if needed. However, as a consolation, I have included a different extended mix of "Omaha Beach" that I can't quite place on either single, with a different running time and everything! If anyone knows where it belongs, do chime in! Otherwise, let's get to the details:

Sanity Plexus- Devil's Deception 12''

Almost had a heart attack when my freshly mailed copy of this had sibilance issues. Fortunately, it was just a brief turntable malfunction, and I'm able to bring you this stellar debut from England's Sanity Plexus.

The two-piece band hailed from Manchester, home of some of the best post-punk bands in the world, so you can expect some fruitful gems here. Aggressive drum machines (most running a similar, but effective program), incisive guitar work, yet solid, danceable rhythms. A real treat!

It seems the band earned quite the following during their tenure, which lasted for three LPs. The band grew poppier and less aggressive with each release, which culminated in a name change. Sexus, as the band would then be known, grew in popularity into the early 1990s with a more acid house sound, typical of England at the time. Sexus released two LPs before disbanding.

Second Decay- Killing Desire 12''

After all these years, this band should be a household name for synth afficianados. Dark Entries has been gracious enough to re-release the band's debut record, La Décadence Électronique, but the Second Decay story began in 1989 with the Killing Desire 12'', which set the tone for their detached, yet incredibly catchy sound.

For those unfamiliar, Second Decay were a German duo, consisting of Andreas Michael Sippel and Christian Stephan Purwien. This 12'' was, according to Discogs, the first and only 12'' on Hit Wave Records, and the first of several killer releases by the band, whose last record appeared in 2001. Mary Goes Round- Sunset LP/CD

A few years ago, I featured French psychedelic-tinged coldwave band Mary Goes Round's second LP, the killer 70 Suns In the Sky. A few folks asked for their debut LP, but it must have slipped my mind for all these years, so this post will hopefully rectify this obvious oversight. As an added bonus, I've included the CD issue of Sunset, complete with five bonus tracks that follow the original 12'' LP.

Feu Ma Mere- Seasons of Mournful LP

Here's an obscure German darkwave record dating back to 1989. The band was a two piece, centering around the efforts of vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Joelen Mingi and Alexander Klaffke. While discogs claims this is their only release, a youtube clip hints at a handful of earlier releases.

The band split just a year after releasing this LP. Mingi continued on with The Angina Pectoris, which aimed to update Feu Ma Mere's electronic sound with a more fleshed out lineup.

As for the record at hand, it's a curious blend of Sisters-gloom, simple driving drum machines, and layers of romanticized keyboards, definitely a good listen for fans of the more wistful darkwave sound. You kind of get a good idea of what you're in for by simply looking at the cover. Here's the info:

Ziyo- Ziyo LP

Here's a classic post-punk record, the first of many from Polish act Ziyo, who formed in 1984. Though it took five years for the band to release their debut, the wait was well worth it, as this s/t record is a quintessential slice of coldwave music from the Eastern Block.

Ziyo are still together to date, and just released their eighth studio record in 2009. As it stands, they are just as vital and powerful as Siekiera and De Press, two of their shorter-lived peers. Perhaps the key to the band's longevity is their more eclectic sound? Either way, let's get to the details.

Beautiful Pea Green Boat- Still Life CD

Today's post features a collection by UK ethereal/post-punk band Beautiful Pea Green Boat, released on CD in 1989. Taking their name from The Owl and the Pussycat, a classic children's poem written by Edward Lear, the outfit were primarily a two piece, consisting of Ian Williams and Heather Wright. The band released a handful of 12'' and two full length recordings in the mid-1980s, splitting at the turn of the decade. Their material is often downtempo, melodic, and moody, with several repetitive synths grounding the material with an electronic/darkwave edge.

This collection is comprised of the band's best moments from their two prior LPs (1987's Obsessions and 1988's Get Religion). Perhaps I'll upload them too, should anyone be interested. Otherwise, here's the info for the compilation:

Invisible Limits- A Conscious State LP

Invisible Limits were a German synthpop/darkwave band who formed in 1985. The band was originally the brainchild of Thomas Lüdke, who departed after releasing two 12'' singles to form the Invisible Spirit. The band shed their then darker edge and employed a more poppy approach, releasing material well into the '90s.

Though the band seemingly split, an unreleased "final" album appeared in 2005, self-released by the band through their official site. The band has also issued a five disc box set comprising their entire discography and a handful of single remixes, so any curious parties might do well to pick one up via Amazon import. Otherwise, here's the information for their second full-length record, 1989's A Conscious State.

For your previewing pleasure, here's an old dusty "live" clip of "Golden Dreams," a favorite track and DJ staple of mine. Though the clip gives you an idea of what the song sounds like, it doesn't hold a candle to the crispness of the original track.

Samedi- Doubts & Beliefs LP

Samedi were a synthpop band hailing from Sweden. I first discovered their classic track "Between Two Hearts" on the fantastic Retronics compilation, which collects several of their peers. Whereas other Swedish synthpop bands like the Mobile Homes earned some cult success in the States, Samedi wasn't able to achieve the same success despite a similar sound. Otherwise, the band formed in 1983 as a four piece, and fluxuated between three and four members throughout the course of the 1980s.

The band's discography consists of three 7'' singles and one full length record. All of their releases were pressed via Canned Music, the band's own label. After calling it a day in 1990, members of Samedi focused their efforts on manning a recording studio, producing, writing, and engineering several more Italo-tinged bands over the years. Check their discogs page for some of the tracks the band worked on.

November Group- NG89 Cassette

Meanwhile, thanks to a generous donation and a quick home conversion this morning, I am pleased to offer the final piece in November Group's discography, the oft-coveted NG89 Cassette, released only in this format in 1989, shortly before the group disbanded.

Death in June/Les Joyaux De La Princesse- Östenbräun CD

This very rare disc was just lent to me by a generous fellow, so I'm inclined to upload it here for any curious parties. The disc in question is a collaborative effort between neofolk legends Death in June and the previously featured French one-man project Les Joyaux De Le Princesse.

This particular disc is a reissue of sorts, collecting some of the finer moments from the similarly titled cassette release from 1989, which featured several original Death in June numbers, remixed and processed by Les Joyaux De La Princesse. There are a few collaborative efforts on the 1995 reissue, aptly named, and the CD deletes the interviews with Death in June's Douglas P.

As with most Les Joyaux...recordings, all editions of this particular record are extremely limited and worth quite a pretty penny, so keep yr eyes peeled for one! Otherwise, where's the details:

Excès Nocturne would reform in 2006, seventeen years after their initial demise, and remain active to this day. The band currently consists of Remy Lozowski (guitars), Richard Horon (bass), and Ariane-Corine Zimny (vocals). An EP of new material appeared just last month.

Les Joyaux De La Princesse are a most recent obsession of mine, and I am pleased to offer up a record that's been buzzing in my ears for a week straight. In short, Les Joyaux De La Princesse is a one man project from the heart of France. Les Joyaux De La Princesse has dabbled in several styles over the course of countless collaborations, generally circling around the industrial/noise/dark ambient realm.

The project began as far back as 1986, but the first recorded work, the cassette uploaded below, appeared in 1989. Since then, Les Joyaux De La Princesse has released countless limited edition records, each acting as a brief audio document of French history dating back as far as the 1930s. Les Joyaux De La Princesse has also collaborated with several key players in the scene, including the likes of Death in June, Muslimgauze, and Blood Axis. As of 2008, the man behind Les Joyaux De La Princesse records additional material as La Voix Des Nôtres.

Records indicate that the debut uploaded below hails from an extremely limited cassette recording. A limited edition of 49, I reckon this 1989 record would fetch a pretty penny if uncovered in its original form. It was re-released on CD in 1993. Without any further ado, the detials:

In the meanwhile, I've uploaded a treat today, a coldwave record for the first actual cold wave in New York. Formed in France in the mid 1980s, Neutral Project released a handful of cassette and CD releases until the mid nineties. The band began as a two piece, and expanded to a three-piece outfit in 1991. Also around this time, members of Neutral Project banded together with members of the like-minded Endraum to form A Foamy Project In Neutral Days, who released a handful of songs in 1991.

Otherwise, Neutral Project released their final effort in 1994. Vocalist Yvon Million passed away in 2001. Soon after, members Kristian Dernoncourt and Dominique Oudiou formed No Tears, who are active to this day.
