Testcard F- Bandwagon Tango 7''

This one's a little less pristine, but I'm still pleased to have a vastly improved rip of Testcard F's first 7'', released in 1983. I originally uploaded an inferior (and potentially out of phase) version of the single back in 2008, with the remaining discography and several tidbits about the UK band. Unfortunately, it was the best copy of the tracks kicking around, and it's taken me years to track down a better copy without paying a small fortune for it.

There's a few cracks and pops on this copy (the a-side seems fairly well loved) but I hope you'll all agree that it still makes for a cleaner, clearer, and more solid listen. Here's the rundown:

End of Data- Dans Votre Monde LP

Next up, we have the second End of Data LP, finally rescued from poorly-ripped hell. The only copy most folks have of this record in digital format are ripped at a low bitrate from a less than stellar LP copy, so here's a more crisp, solid copy. This second record is slightly more poppy and new wave-esque than their more abrasive and strange debut, available here, so feel free to compare and contrast, and read up on the band while you're at it. Otherwise, here's a more solid and consistent rip of this 1985 classic!

Twice a Man- Works on Yellow LP/CD

Yet another icy piece of Swedish minimal/coldwave for you, as this post features another solid Twice a Man record. We've already covered this glorious band several times over, so click here and here for more info and music. Otherwise, this particular LP sees the band experimenting with more atmospheric and ambient textures, all while keeping their signature synth-perfection intact. This particular record also features "Girl," one of the band's best known tunes, also featured on the Retronics compilation. Get that here, if you're in need.

The LP was released in 1986, and was re-released on CD in 1993 with an extra bonus track added. This is the version uploaded below. Here's the info:

Sequins and Spandex: Parte Tre

Since it's been a regrettably long time since I've made one of these, I am pleased to unveil the latest addition to the Sequins and Spandex series. Unlike the previous installments, which featured a few modern cuts inspired by the original classics, the third in this series of italo, space disco, and hi-nrg dance traxx contains fourteen original tracks, dating from 1980-1987.

I had enough leftovers to make part four (and hell, maybe even a part five) in a few weeks time, so stay tuned! Otherwise, without any further ado, here's the tracklisting:

Sequins and Spandex: Parte Tre
1. Cybernetic Love- Casco
2. The World at Your Disposal- La Grotta
3. When I Let You Down- M & G
4. Bad Passion- Steel Mind
5. Telephone Computer- Crazy Gang
6. Never Ever- Peppermint Lounge
7. Love is Like a Game- Hot Cold
8. 'Cause I Need You, 'Cause I Love You- De De Mo
9. Voyage, Voyage- Desireless
10. Disco Band (Vocal)- Scotch
11. Young Men (Special Radio Version)- Nite Lite
12. Body Heat- Fockewulf 190
13. My Frames- Amin Peck
14. I Wanna Fly Away- Blue Russell

Starter- Start CD-R

The following upload comes as a request, and features Swiss minimal wave band Starter's entire discography. Starter formed in 1981 as a three piece, led by Francis Foss, who remained the only original member after a personnel switch in 1985.

Starter would release one LP in 1981, followed by several 12'' releases throughout the late eighties, calling it quits in 1989. Francis Foss was also active in Shy Rose, a Swiss Italo Disco act who released a handful of singles.

In 2004, Topfuel Entertainment collected Starter's discography and released it as an extremely limited CD-R pressing, sold alongside a DVD of various live performances over the years. Only sixty copies of this fine release exist, and I've had my eyes peeled for ages. Snap one up if you see it! Otherwise, here's the information for the CD-R portion.

Oppenheimer Analysis- New Mexico cassette

I'm pleased to offer up a classic cassette release by one of the most respected minimal wave acts, Oppenheimer Analysis. The band was formed by Andy Oppenheimer (painter, nuclear weapons specialist, vocalist) and Martin Lloyd (also active as Analysis) in the early 1980s, after the two met at the 1979 World Science Fiction Convention in Brighton, sharing a mutual love of Cold War propoganda and early electronic music. They began recording together in 1982, offering up but one official release, which has earned high cult status during the resurgence of minimal wave music in the new millenium. This has inevitably led to the re-pairing of Martin and Andy and the reactiviation of Oppenheimer Analysis.

Since their reactivation, the band has reissued several of their classic recordings, including a self-titled vinyl release on Minimal Wave records, but the duo has also recorded several new tracks, released as the Der Wissenschaftler EP in 2005. They are still active to this day, though each alternately persue several side projects in the interim.

I've uploaded their original 1982 cassette, entitled New Mexico, featuring 12 tracks of minimal wave greatness. The cassette was also reissued on CD-R in 2005, with a bonus track attached, which I've also included for good measure. Here's the proper information on the release:

Oppenheimer Analysis- New Mexico Cassette
1. Don't Be Seen With Me
2. Scorpions
3. Radiance
4. Men In White Coats
5. Modern Wonder
6. Subterranean Desire

8. The Devil's Dancers
9. New Mexico
10. Security Risk
11. Behind The Shades
12. Cold War
13. You Won't Forget Me (Bonus Track)

A vastly improved digital version of this cassette is now available via iTunes and Amazon. Highly recommended! Please support the original artist and purchase these mp3s!

For your viewing pleasure, here's a live clip of the dynamic duo performing 'Men In White Coats' live in Belgium in 2006.

Due to such high demand, Minimal Wave has repressed the 2005 self-titled EP, so click below to nab a copy before these all disappear as well! Also, please direct your attention to the duo's official site for more information, a more expansive discography, and all sorts of other useful tidbits:

1000 Ohm- A.G.N.E.S. 12'' & Love In Motion 12''

Back to the grind, ladies and gentlemen. Just recently married, I haven't had much time to think about posting, but now that the dust has settled, let's get this blog back up and running. I'm still aiming for a twice a week goal for now, so let's see how that goes.

Today's band is 1000 Ohm, a two man Belgian minimal wave project formed in 1979. Originally, 1000 Ohm was the brainchild of Frank Van Bogaert, but as the outfit continued into the 1980s, Johan Van Herck joined in to flesh out the band's sound, joined by an unnamed third member for live shows (if anyone knows the third member's name, please chime in). The first release uploaded today, the 1981 A.G.N.E.S. 12'', features just Frank at the helm, while Van Herck joined in time for 1984's Love In Motion 12''.

The duo split in 1987, and Van Bogaert went on to produce several local artists before purchasing ACE studios in Antwerp. As the nineties came to a close, Frank began to release a series of his own organic synth recordings, some of which have won German awards. He still records to this day.

Without any further adieu, here's the info for these two synth-pop gems:

Testcard F- complete discography

I've had several requests this year for the remaining discography of Norwich minimal band Testcard F. Firstly, here's my previously quoted entry on the band, with download information following:

"Testcard F formed in 1981, and reconstructed and built their own synthesizers throughout their tenure. Unlike some synth-punk and minimal wave acts of the time, this band near-completely utilized electronic instruments, drum machines, and backing tapes; the only organic instrumentation appearing in the form of trash cans, coat racks, and other assorted bits of debris. Oftentimes, their live performances would be slagged viciously by heckling attendees, anxious for guitars. One particular gig in their hometown of Norwich ended in a small riot.

The band split immediately on the brink of success after winning a Norwich battle of the bands and recording their two singles and Peel Session in 1984."

Xex- Group:Xex LP

Here's a request of sorts for a classic minimal synthpop gem. Xex were a more experimental wave band, formed in South River, New Jersey. They were a mysterious affair, releasing one record in 1980 and disappearing soon after. The band "began" as a high school kazoo trio. Member Waw Pierogi's interest in science led to several unique delay and echo experiments in the early years, most of which were employed on the band's debut. However, though outfit had little musical technique, their trials and experiments yielded several songs, and after their first performance, the original trio of Waw, Thumbalina Gugielmo, and Alex Zander brought in two of their friends/fans to round out the lineup. Thus, after several experiments and debates, Xex was officially born in 1978.

The band spent the next two years constructing several tracks utilizing minimal synth techniques, semi-conventional song structures, and male and female vocal experiments. Due to the nature of their project and the band's limited abilities, live shows were often inconsistent and humanistic, and often featured performance art and video accompianments.

The original pressing of Group:Xex sold little over a thousand copies. Soon after its release, additional members David Anderson and Jon-Boy Diode departed as Xex completed work on a second record, which due to limited funding and a since-deteriorated master tape, has not yet seen the light of day, and may never will. The original trio continued to work together along with new member Cookie Ruggerio (who previous involvement with the band was limited to walking a stuffed cat during a performance of 'Kitty'). Only a few tracks have surfaced, and mid 80s performances of the band did not include Waw Pierogi.

In 2004, cult interest in the band culminated in a proper reissue of Group:Xex, complete with several demo cuts from the band's original sessions. Just a year before, Alex Zander passed away from a heart attack.

Here's the information for the CD release of Group:Xex.

Xex- Group:Xex (reissue)

Nine Circles- S/T CD

Some of you may have seen this one on Mutant Sounds*, but if not, here's some classic female-fronted minimal wave for you folks, the lone release by Netherlands based band Nine Circles. The self-titled disc was released in 1996 but is comprised of tracks recorded in 1982. Though the band's material scattered across various compilation appearances, it took 14 years for this collection to surface, and there's little information about this band to be found otherwise.

I have two more tracks by Nine Circles kicking around; 'How About the Aims in Life?' and 'Once In a While' respectively. I know the former dates from a Dutch compilation cassette entitled Colonial Vipers, but not sure about the latter. For now, here's the information for the self-titled collection:

Nine Circles- Nine Circles CD
1. When I Dance
2. Twinkling Stars
3. Here Come I
4. The Rose
5. Something Between You And Me
6. Miss Love
7. What's There Left
8. I'm Deeply Touched

*download it here*

In other news, a few folks have been kind and generous to donate hard-to-find releases over the past few days, so if you're keen, I'll work on posting them up here with all the appropriate information soon. If you're impatient, feel free to scour the comments from the last few entries and pluck 'em out!

*I am admittedly crap about checking every blog to see what's been posted, but in all fairness, Mutant Sounds is a vast ocean, so I didn't realise they tossed this same compilation up until after I uploaded it. Nuts!

Christof Glowalla- Complete Works LP

I am frustratingly hard-pressed to find a sufficient amount of information about today's artist, Christof Glowalla, a minimal synth/NDW outfit from Germany. I'm even having difficulty pinning down a proper image of the act, aside from various sketches in this vein. Though seemingly a one man outfit, the 'official' myspace page clues in on a few other collaborators, though their roles are undisclosed. Certain other records indicate one lone release, a 1980 7'' single limited to 1000 copies, but I've unearthed and uploaded a one disc collection of completed works, which include a handful of other tracks recorded throughout the 1980s, which most likely appeared on other under-the-radar 7'' singles.

That all said, if anyone has any further information on Christof, past OR present, please send it my way. Otherwise, without any further delay, the details:

Snowy Red- The Right to Die LP

Snowy Red is mainly a one-man minimal wave outfit from Belgium, active throughout the 1980s. Though occasionally a band here and there (and featuring scattered collaborators during their tenure), Snowy Red was primarily an outlet for Micky Mike (real name: Marcel Thiel), who released four records (and two cover records under his proper name) before seemingly disappearing from the music scene in the early nineties. Though seemingly a one-off reunion, Snowy Red reactivated for a Belgian music festival in 2004 as a two piece.

Though each of Snowy Red's four records are synth classics, I've uploaded my favorite, 1982's The Right to Die, which has a darker atmosphere and heavier synthetics than some of the other material. For a taste of later day Snowy Red, revisit this post, as the Carol & Snowy Red 'Breakdown' 7'' is included in the grab bag.

Details:

Snowy Red- The Right to Die LP (1982)
1. Euroshima (Wardance)
2. Nowhere
3. I'm Hurt
4. Never Alive
5. Relax
6. Opium
7. Lies In Your Eyes
8. Madman
9. The Right To Die

After scouring youtube, I came up with several clips for Snowy Red, but none actually are videos or live performances, but instead are songs playing with a static image, while one consists of a digitally rendered Second Life character boogying to 'Euroshima.' I won't link it here, but it's amusing, for those who wish to seek it out.

Otherwise, I believe Snowy Red's material is best hunted down through your local record shops and eBay, but there IS a seemingly fan-run myspace page, for more information and some digital accompaniment:

Camera Obscura- Horizons of Suburbia LP

Thanks for all the requests over the past few weeks, ladies and gents...I've been uploading them slowly but surely over the past few posts, and ideally, I shall attend to each one of them in the very near future. Today's request was for Camera Obscura's Horizons of Suburbia LP, a synth/wave gem from 1983. Well...not quite. These ten tracks were recorded fifteen years ago but remained unreleased until 2005. Previously, the only documented Camera Obscura releases were a 7'' single and a lone compilation appearance.

For the record, there seem to be several bands bearing the same name, including a rather prominent indie pop group. This particular Camera Obscura, however, consisted of Nigel James and Peter Oldroyd and hailed from the UK. The band formed in 1982 and soldiered through record label hardships until 1987, when the band when on indefinite hiatus. In 2005, however, Nigel and Peter dusted off their old material and took to playing shows throughout Europe, meanwhile releasing this lost classic as well as a live record and re-recorded single material. All recent Camera Obscura material has been released by German label Anna Louge Records.

Details:

Opus Finis- Opus Finis CD-R

Opus Finis is a currently active two man minimal wave outfit hailing from Miami Beach, Florida. They are part of the recent upsurge and rekindling of the minimal wave movement, and in cahoots with NYC's Wierd Records. Other information is hard to come by, as the band seems relatively new and underground. Perhaps their shroud of mystery is intentional...

The band's discography consists of one recent 7'' single, two tracks on the vinyl-only Wierd Compilation, and one extremely limited CD-R from 2006, the latter which I've uploaded for your listening pleasure.
